Gunung Singgalang

Gunung Singgalang is a inactive volcano located near Bukittinggi, at Sumatra Barat. The forest is pretty nice there, with bamboo jungle at the lower part, and old forest the rest.

You can find more info (Not very usefull) here

How to reach:

The nearest village is Koto Baru, along the road Padang-Bukittinggi. Stop there and ask for the dirty track wich goes to the lower part of the mountain. The final part is only possible by motorcycle or by foot.

Tips:

I recommend sleep in the mountain. Is a long trek very hard sometimes and you have to take everything you need to camp. The temperatures can fall very quick so, take warm clothes. I didnt see anybody along the track in 3 times and there isnt good telephone coverage there so, take care!!!

Birding:

The birding there is awesome. At the lower part expect endemic species like black-capped white-eye, blue-masked leaf bird along others like temminck`s sunbird, golden babbler, white-browed shrike-babbler, sunda owlet, grey-chinned minivet.

After 1,5 or 2 hours, the forest is great. There check carefully for salvadori´s pheasant, pink-headed fruit dove and shiny blue whistling thrush. Also some good parties with indigo flycatcher, mountain leaf warbler, spectacled and black laughingthrushes, sunda (Sumatran) bulbul, mountain and oriental white-eye

Pink- headed fruit dove....... Probably the worst pic i have posted ever!!!!

Sunda (Sumatran) bulbul

After 6-9 hours (Depends of the rhythm), near the top, the forest is very busy. Here laughingthrushes are specially conspicious. Take a look over other goodies like rufous-vented niltava, yellow-breasted warbler or sunda minivet
